چکیده

rF he name of Dr. Charles E. Smith is closely entwined with the modern history of coccidioidomycosis. His early reports1 ’2delineated the endemic area of coccidioidomycosis, the epidemiologic aspects, the life history of the fungus C. immitis, the importance of dust control, the use of coccidioidin, and the development of accurate serologic procedures. He noted that military recruits and travelers visiting the southwestern part of the continental United States may develop coccidioidomycosis.

The value of initial cavitation to predict re-treatment with pulmonary tuberculosis

OBJECTIVE Pulmonary cavitation is the classic hallmark of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and is the site of very high mycobacterial burden associated with antimycobacterial drug resistance and treatment failure. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between re-treatment PTB and initial pulmonary cavitation coordinated with other clinical factors. METHODS We conducted a...

Infected cavitating pulmonary infarction.

The differential diagnosis of pulmonary cavitation is broad. The most common causes include infection and malignancy. Pulmonary thromboembolism is a common problem worldwide, with an estimated 650,000 cases in the United States annually. Pulmonary embolism does not usually lead to cavitation, given the dual blood supply of the lung; however, cavitation may complicate 4–7% of all pulmonary infar...

Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidal infection can manifest as pulmonary or extrapulmonary disease. Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis occurs in 95% of all cases and can be divided into three main categories: primary, complicated, and residual pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. The primary infection occurs with inhalation of airborne arthroconidia. As few as 10 arthroconidia are capable of causing an infection in animal models. ...

Acute pulmonary embolism leading to cavitation and large pulmonary abscess: A rare complication of pulmonary infarction

Pulmonary infarction is an infrequent complication of pulmonary embolism due to the dual blood supply of the lung. Autopsy studies have reported cavitation to occur in only 4-5% of all pulmonary infarctions with an even smaller proportion of these cases becoming secondarily infected. Patients with infected cavitating pulmonary infarction classically present with fever, positive sputum culture, ...

Immunological characterization of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in patients with acute pulmonary coccidioidomycosis.

BACKGROUND The specific cellular immunological characteristics of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in acute pulmonary coccidioidomycosis have not been defined. METHODS BAL fluid from patients living in a coccidioidomycosis-endemic region of Arizona who were undergoing bronchoscopy because of pulmonary infiltrates was analyzed. Mononuclear cells from BAL fluid and peripheral blood mononuclea...
